Restaurants to fundraise for Camp Cadet

Restaurants to fundraise for Camp Cadet

Francis Scarcella1/31/2017

LEWISBURG — Valley restaurants will offer residents the opportunity to aid Susquehanna Valley Law Enforcement Camp Cadet program beginning today.

All you have to do to help the popular police camp is visit Chipotle along Route 15 in Union County and let them know you want to donate to the program, Milton state trooper and Camp Cadet leader, Rick Blair said. From 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Chipotle has agreed to donate 50 percent of the sales to the camp in order to ensure the program stays functional.

The Susquehanna Valley Law Enforcement Camp Cadet is a 501(c)(3) program and has now entered its 11th year when cadets go to Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, from June 18 until the 23. The camp, which costs about $30,000 to operate, is for youths ages 12 to 15.

Last year, more than 100 campers attended, up from the average of 60 in year's past, Blair said. The cost is about $400 per week per camper, and since the camp operates exclusively on donations, fundraisers are important, Blair said.

Blair and other troopers were thrilled when Chipotle came on board, he said. "I hope people go out and help us out," he said.

On Feb. 22, more than 15 troopers and other Valley celebrities will partner at Applebee's in Lewisburg for the annual tip-the-server night.

Troopers and other volunteers serve patrons and all tips are donated to the camp, Blair said. The night is also meant for patrons to meet law enforcement and learn more about the camp, Blair said.

"This is another nice fun event for the whole family," Blair said. "We always love going and meeting with people and telling them everything they want or need to know about the camp."

Sunbury police Chief Tim Miller said the fundraising events for Camp Cadet are important. "We want to help the camp out in any way we can," Miller said. "They do such a great job and the camp is so important to helping our youth. Getting out and donating to help make sure the camp remains running is a must."

The camp is free for participants, and individuals may apply at www.svlecc. com, Blair said. For information on Camp Cadet, visit the website or call Blair at the Milton barracks at (570) 524-2662.
